My time at 6th High School of Chalkida involved helping facilitate programs with English learners as part of the U.S. Embassy's ACCESS program. In February we shared some information about Black History Month and did some activities together. Then my Distinguished Award in Teaching colleague, Rochelle Darville, organized an interesting and engaging women's history month program that I helped facilitate. The students are from a variety of immigrant and refugee backgrounds. They are committed and engaged learners.  Adult students attend classes at night.  The view from the classroom windows revealed a golden sunset on the white buildings and hillsides of Athens.  The gymnasium and lyceum share a large building, but maintain separate spaces.  large collaborative mural in the high school section of the building.  Few Greek schools offer lunch, as most Greeks eat at 2 or 3 in the afternoon. However, every school has a canteen which provides warm hand pies and desserts as well as coffee and other snacks. |
